Frequently asked questions

What is BASILE MAKES THINGS?

BASILE MAKES THINGS is a bespoke woodworking studio specializing in one-of-a-kind custom furniture crafted from rare and locally sourced woods. Each piece is built using premium slab and high-grade lumber, then finished with meticulous attention to detail for lasting beauty and durability. With a focus on true craftsmanship and material quality, the work highlights the natural character of the wood while delivering heirloom-level design tailored to each client.

A deep passion for the creative potential within each wood selection drives the process from the very beginning. Significant time and care are devoted to sourcing the right material for every commissioned piece, considering grain movement, figure, tone, and character to ensure the wood itself becomes a central design element. This thoughtful approach allows each creation to tell its own story, resulting in furniture that feels both intentional and truly one-of-a-kind.

What is the process for Custom Built Furniture &
how much does it cost?

Pricing is primarily influenced by two factors: the materials—especially the wood, which is the centerpiece of every piece—and the overall design.

After our initial consultation, I begin sourcing the right wood for your project. During this stage, I’ll share photos of raw slab or lumber options for your approval. Clients typically purchase the selected wood directly and have it shipped to my shop. Depending on rarity, size, and figure, raw wood can range anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per slab. This sourcing phase generally takes 2–4 weeks.

At the same time, I will refine the design through reference images, sketches, or concept discussions to ensure everything aligns with your vision. Once the wood arrives, the build process begins.

Build Timelines:

  • Dining tables & coffee tables: approximately 2–4 months

  • Kitchen islands: approximately 4–6 months

  • Consoles: approximately 8–10 weeks

  • Desks with drawers: approximately 6 months

Production & Finishing:
Production timelines can vary based on complexity and finish selection. Each piece receives multiple coats of high-quality finish, with careful sanding between applications to achieve a refined, durable surface. Painted finishes are professionally sprayed, and all final coatings are applied in a controlled spray booth environment to ensure a flawless result free from contaminants.

Costs:
Production and finishing services start at $1,500 and increase based on design complexity and size. Final pricing is discussed and agreed upon prior to purchasing materials. A 50% non-refundable deposit for production and finishing is required to begin your project.

Why does production take so long?

Each piece is built in a one-man workshop, where every step of the process is completed by hand. From selecting and preparing the raw wood to joinery, shaping, sanding, and finishing, every detail is handled with care and intention—nothing is rushed or outsourced.

Bespoke furniture is a highly involved, multi-stage process that simply can’t be replicated on an assembly line. Proper wood preparation, precise construction, and layered finishing all require time, patience, and attention to detail to ensure the final piece is both beautiful and built to last. The extended timeline reflects a commitment to craftsmanship, quality materials, and creating something truly one-of-a-kind for each client.

Why can’t you make this piece for less than a store sells it for?

Mass-produced furniture is built at scale using standardized designs, lower-cost materials, and high-volume manufacturing processes that significantly reduce the cost per piece. In contrast, each project here is made to order, built entirely by hand, and tailored to your specific design and material preferences.

Custom work also involves sourcing premium or rare wood, careful material selection, and a time-intensive build and finishing process. Every detail—from the joinery to the final finish—is done with a focus on longevity and craftsmanship rather than speed. While store-bought furniture may offer a lower upfront price, bespoke pieces are created to a much higher standard, resulting in something truly unique and built to last for generations.

Why does my newly refinished table show damage or wear?

Although I've only been asked this question once, I think it deserves a thorough explanation.

A professionally refinished wood surface restores the beauty and integrity of the piece, but like all fine wood furniture, it still requires reasonable care and protection during everyday use.

Wood finishes continue to cure after delivery and can be vulnerable to heat, moisture, scratches, chemical cleaners, writing pressure, and heavy or abrasive items placed directly on the surface.

To help preserve the finish, we recommend using coasters, placemats, felt pads, and protective coverings as appropriate, while avoiding standing water, harsh cleaners, and direct heat.

When transporting furniture from the workshop, pieces should be wrapped with moving blankets or other padded protection and should never have items stacked directly on top of finished surfaces during transport or storage, as this can damage the finish before it has fully cured.

Damage caused by normal household wear, accidental misuse, improper transport, lack of protective care, or environmental conditions is not considered a defect in workmanship or materials. With proper maintenance and handling, a refinished piece can remain beautiful for many years.
